Landscaping is a BIG job - there's no doubt about it. Which is why we asked Alpine Vista Landscapes to share their 8 Do's of Landscaping. Whether you're just beginning to develop your yard or looking to add a few finishing touches, the tips below are bound to help you maximize your outdoor space!

My first garden was a complete disaster: deer ate the tulips before they had a chance to bloom, the daisies spread faster than dandelions, and the seeds I had planted didn’t grow at all. I thought that my green thumb was supposed to be genetic (I come from a family of farmers), but it turns out that landscaping is, ironically, more about “nurture” than “nature.”

So, if you want to nurture your green thumb a little, then you came to the right place. Here are 8 Landscaping Do’s to help you out:

1. Do remember that your yard can be more than JUST the lawn. While a lush green lawn is beautiful, grass is a big investment and will suck your water, nutrients (read: money), and time before the summer is over. Instead, consider building low-maintenance flower beds to decrease the area of your lawn.

2. Do think about purchasing good quality landscaping fabric. Landscaping fabric provides a weed barrier and will save you from a major pain in your backside—literally!

3. Do start your landscaping project with a comprehensive plan. Perhaps it goes without saying, but plants grow, so make sure that you leave enough space between them when you plant and avoid planting large shrubs or trees in front of windows.

4. Do your research J Check the internet or your local greenhouse for information on which plants thrive in the shade vs. the sun, when they need to be pruned, and how much water they should be getting.

5. Do consider throwing a few curves into your garden beds to add interest and create a more informal look.

6. Do think in multiples (especially odd numbers). Multiples are more appealing to the eye than singular plants.

7. Do notbe afraid to take things out. Are your Junipers overgrown and partially dead? Does your Weeping Caragana remind you of a scene from the Nightmare Before Christmas? As much as I LOVE plants, it’s okay to give them the ol’ heave ho if they aren’t working for you and your garden.

7. Do contact Alpine Vista Landscapes with any questions or concerns. We’re always here to help!
