Home Tips & Tricks

It’s official – you’re moving! This can be an exciting yet hectic time. If you’ve never moved before or you’re just feeling overwhelmed, take a look through our Handy Dandy Moving Checklist to help get you going in the right direction!

A month before:
· Look into moving companies in your city and get at least two quotes.
· At the same time, you should also inquire about mover’s insurance (just in case anything happens to your most prized possessions).
· Register your change of address through the post office to ensure that you continue to receive your mail once you have moved.
· In the case that boxes go missing or get lost, back up important files and photos on a USB and keep it in your valuables bag.

Two weeks before:
· Go through everything in your house – from the basement to the ensuite. If you haven’t used it within the past year, get rid of it! You can host a garage sale or donate unwanted items to charity.
· Begin to pack stuff that isn’t used often. Clearly label all boxes and create an inventory of your items, this will make it easier to ensure you have everything once you have moved in.
· Notify your pharmacy, banks, doctors and dental offices, insurance company, the CRA, your employers HR department, your children’s school, and any other businesses or companies with your mailing address of your move to ensure they update their records accordingly.

One week before:
· If you’re taking your freezer with you now is the time to empty and defrost it! Get creative with your meals and try to use up any food that is left over from the big thaw.
· Arrange to have your utilities to be disconnected at your current address and connected at your new address on the day of moving.
· Take the time to set valuables aside that you will bring with you in the car on moving day. This can include things such as: expensive jewellery, keys, prescription medications, and anything else that is of importance to you. Mark the box “Do Not Load” to ensure you personally bring it with you on moving day.

The day of moving:
· Assemble a bag of things you will need for the next 24 hours while you are settling in. This can include things such as: water, snacks, toothbrush and toothpaste, and a change of clothes.
· Advise the movers of any items that require special care during the move to ensure none of your possessions end up broken or damaged.
· If you are unable to be there to the greet movers at your new house arrange to have someone who can. They can help assist the movers in where to put large items so you’re not stuck trying to maneuver them yourself them later on.
· Make sure to review your copy of the inventory from the move to ensure nothing has been damaged or lost.
· Pick up some pizza and beer, sit back and relax, and enjoy the feeling of living in a brand new home! Smells good, doesn’t it?
