Summer 2014's Hottest Decor

Lifestyle & Design

Alberta’s hottest season is upon us, so why not welcome a little of that summer sunshine inside your home? Brighten up your décor with bold tropical prints. Escape to paradise with your very own beach house. Or, create an indoor garden with floral accents.

There’s no need to break the bank though, as a little refresh is all takes. Change out throw cushions and area rugs for lighter fabrics, swap your everyday table settings, towels and bedding for seasonally inspired hues and add a few new accent pieces to complete the look. For a little inspiration check out some of summer’s most sizzling décor trends below.

Taste of the Tropics

Think exotic prints and shades of vibrant blue and green. If you’re decorating a room with a neutral colour scheme then a small change will make a big impact with this trend. Create a focal point, such as a bold lampshade, tablecloth, bedspread or window coverings. Then layer in new pieces until the room feels finished. Fresh flowers are another way to bring the tropics home, and remember that the arrangement and vase can easily be changed out to keep things interesting.

Chic Beach House

If you’re feeling a bit landlocked this summer, try creating your own beach hideaway at home. The coast is where sand meets sky, so keep everything airy and light with muted blues and natural linens. Dig out your scenic holiday beach shots and find cool mother of pearl frames to display them in. Bring in natural materials like wicker, shells or even driftwood. Candles or flowers displayed in hurricane vases of varying sizes will add to the chic coastal feel.

Ombre Colour Refresh

What’s hot for your hair is now cool for your home. Colour fading is big for summer décor and it’s surprisingly easy to implement. Subtle accent pieces like pillows, throws and vases will add just a touch of this trend, but if you’re feeling brave, why not commit to a feature wall? Paint is the least expensive way to achieve the look, and there are plenty of DIY videos online to help. The design can be as soft or as vibrant as you choose – it really comes down your colour selection. Self-adhesive wallpaper is another great option, and although it’s a pricier purchase you’ll have more control over the final result.
