Playing in a Winter Wonderland

Lifestyle & Design

Slap on Some Snowshoes. As the saying goes, ‘if you can walk, you can snowshoe,’ so strap a pair on and make some tracks. Babes can ride on your back, while the little ones can frolic and play. Check out a local park, like Fish Creek Provincial Park in south Calgary, Nose Hill Park in north Calgary, Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park in Cochrane and Big Hill Springs Provincial Park, just outside of Airdrie.

Graceful Glide. Grab a pair of skates and head to an outdoor rink for an afternoon of fun. There are plenty of city parks and ponds to choose from – some even offer skate rentals. To find the rink closest to you, visit Airdrie.ca, Cochrane.ca, Calgary.ca and Okotoks.ca. If you’re lucky enough to live at Mahogany, then you have a winter wonderland in your backyard. When the weather’s cold enough, the frozen lake becomes a magical playground to enjoy with neighbours and friends.

Slip, Slide, Sleigh. For little ones, tobogganing might just be the best part about winter. Trudging up the hill is a great way to burn off excess energy, and you’ll find plenty of slopes suitable for every age group. A favourite spot for night sledding during the holiday season is at the Festival of Lights in Confederation Park in northwest Calgary. Ensure your kiddos always wear a helmet when they sled to avoid injury.

Tube Time. WinSport has just added the radical all-ages Acura Tube Park to its winter line-up. The whole family will love slip sliding down the park’s nine lanes, which makes it the largest of its kind in Western Canada. A two-hour pass starts at just $4.99 for preschoolers, and $18.99 for ages 6-17. Or purchase a family pass for $60.
