Fun flex room ideas.

Lifestyle & Design

At Excel Homes a lot of thought goes into designing homes for the way people live today. Our design teams spend a lot of time listening to our home buyers and prospective buyers about what’s important to them. That’s why we work hard so that each of our Excel Homes floorplans will uniquely suit Albertan lifestyles

That’s why flex rooms are so important.

As the name implies, flex rooms are designed to be just that - flexible. You might see it on our floorplans labelled either ‘flex’, or ‘bonus room”, but it means the same thing: you get to choose what you want to do with that space. This is your chance to create a room that works best for you and your family. The possibilities are endless and with a little creativity, it can become just about anything you want it to be.

We’ve come up with some ideas which we hope might inspire you to customize the perfect flex room into that little oasis that showcases your personality.

1) Entertainment room: Who doesn’t like more entertaining space? You can make your flex room into your own private theatre, or games room with pool or bridge table. By having a separate entertainment room, you don’t have to bother the rest of the family.

2) A spare/guest bedroom: Maybe your college-age son or daughter only comes home for breaks. Or maybe your out-of-town parents like to visit once in awhile. No matter what stage of life you are in, flex rooms allow you to be surrounded by the people you love while giving you extra space.

3) Home office or study: Whether you work from home full-time or need a separate room on those days you need to bring work home, you will appreciate the beauty of having your reserved space to retreat too. A door gives you privacy, while you aren’t bothering the rest of the family while on an important business call.

4) Reading room: Encourage your child’s love of reading by creating a special reading nook to stimulate learning. Fill it with comfy seating and stuffed animals of your child’s favorite storybook characters. Or if this is an adult private reading oasis, fill it with your favourite books, great lighting and of course, lots of comfy cushions to curl up in.

5) Hobby/craft or child’s playroom: Parents can appreciate the value of a room where kids can let their imaginations go wild and where toys, arts and crafts items can be contained within one room. There are so many great designs, including converting one wall into a large chalkboard, adding shelving or dedicated storage space for art supplies. Then, add furniture like small tables, easels for art projects, and big cushions or beanbag chairs, and voila the perfect playroom.

6) Music room: Do you have a budding pianist or guitarist in the family? A home music room is perfect for practicing, recording, or even entertaining guests. P.S. You might want to consider soundproofing the room. Talk to us!

7) Exercise room: No time to get to the gym. No problem. Many of our plans offer windows in the flex rooms so you can let the air flow while working out. Even upstairs rooms can be used for light exercise such as yoga. Good lighting and some bright colours can give the room a lively feel.
