Considering Your Children’s Schooling When Buying a Home

Home & Family

We know that buying a new home can be a stressful process, but when you add children into the mix it can get even more complicated! One of the first things a parent thinks about is “Where will my children go to school?”. Did you know, 7% of the schools in Calgary are over 4 years old and are simply too crowded, so here are some helpful things to consider when deciding where you want to buy your next home:

1. An important factor to ask yourself when considering your children’s schooling is will they be able to walk to school or will they need to be bussed in? There are fees for any child being bussed into school. Charter transportation from K-12 is $295 a year. If this doesn’t work within your budget it may be time to reconsider a different location.

2. The Alberta Government has released a budget of $1.4B to be used over the next three years to modernize schools. Nine schools in Calgary will benefit from this budget and they will receive improvements to the classrooms as well as upgrading to the electrical and mechanical systems. New sprinkler systems and fire alarms will also be updated. Schools benefitting from this budget include: Aboriginal Family Community School, Bowness High School, Christine Meikle School, Foundations for the Future, Jack James High School, St. Cyril School, St. Vincent de Paul Elementary/Junior High School, Ste. Marguerite Bourgeoys School and Westmount Charter School.

3. Finally, it’s important to recognize that Calgary is planning to build some new schools in the upcoming future. This will help to alleviate overcrowding that many schools are now facing as well as providing safe, new buildings for future students. In December it was announced that a new school will be built in Airdrie. It will accommodate Kindergarten to Grade Four and have enough space for 6 students. We build homes in Reunion (NOW SOLD OUT) and HillCrest, so don’t forget to ask our sales team for more information!

Before investing in a new home it is important to consider your children’s education. With a little bit of research it can be easy to determine where your child will go to school, how they will get there and the type of building they will be learning in each and every day!
