Build a DIY Study Nook

While Calgary’s scorching hot temperatures have us feeling like we’re still on summer holiday, the back-to-school season is officially upon us. Your kiddos will soon have books to read and assignments to complete. To help inspire your little Einsteins to finish their homework, create a cozy, cute and quiet study nook in your new Excel home. Here are a few ideas to get your DIY project started.

The Basics. Practical elements that every study nook requires include a power outlet, internet access and adequate lighting so that even the darkest of winter nights appear sunny and bright.

Veiled or Visible. Decide on the style you want for your nook. A hidden spot, tucked neatly away in a closet or built-in. A quiet space behind a screen or joinery doors. Or, a drool-worthy visual masterpiece in plain sight. Many of Excel’s new home models offer an option for a pocket office with built-in desk on the main floor. Simply add your finishing touches – a chair, table lamp and décor – and then hit the books.

Smooth Surface. Next, buy or build your desk. IKEA has some great, inexpensive, ready-made options that fit beautifully in small spaces. If you’re setting up a study nook in the corner of a room, under the staircase, below a loft bed or inside a closet, then a custom-made desk may be the best way to go. With some L-brackets and MDF boards, you can quickly build a desk to fit your space.

Shelves and Storage. Given its small size, a study nook must have ample storage so that your child can maintain an organized and effective work area. Utilize vertical space with shelves above the desk. Baskets, boxes and buckets are great for storing stationery, books and art supplies neatly.

Dapper Décor. Put the final touches on your DIY nook with some chic and cheery décor. A brightly coloured or monochromatic striped rug will create a sense of space. Frame a couple of your budding artist’s latest masterpieces to hang on the walls. Purchase a matte gold, or a fun whimsical desk light. Get your kiddos involved in the decorating process, to help make the space truly theirs.
