Events Around Town: May 2014

Lifestyle & Design

Although May has surprised us with everything from snow, rain, blustery winds and the odd day or so of sunshine, it is starting to look like we will get the much needed warmth we've been craving all year (crossed fingers!). Get out and about to enjoy this great city of ours and take in some amazing events happening this month. Here's what we think shouldn't be missed!

1. Shrek the Music Festival

We’ve all heard of him - The big, green loveable monster, otherwise known as Shrek. This is certainly one of the most popular children’s movies to date (not to mention that the adults quite enjoyed it as well). Calgary will be hosting Shrek the Music Festival from Tuesday, May 2 to Saturday, June 14. The show is 12 minutes long with intermission and will be featured at the Beddington Heights Community Arts Centre, 375 Bermuda Drive NW. With prices being quite reasonable it’s a great way to gather the family for an outing. Adult’s tickets are $25 while children’s are $2. Better act fast before they sell out!

2. The Lilac Festival

The Lilac Festival is held every year in Calgary, but this year makes it extra special as it hits its 25th anniversary. It will take place on Sunday May 25 from 1am-6pm at 4th Street SW from 12 Ave S to Elbow Drive. With over 5 vendors being featured there is sure to be something for everyone! This event is a great chance to get outdoors and enjoy Calgary’s much anticipated spring weather while also taking in performances from local Calgary artists. Whether you choose to attend with your family or friends the Lilac Festival always proves to be a favourite among Calgarians! For more information visit www.lilacfestival.net

3. Cavalia Odysseo

Cavalia Odysseo will be playing in Calgary from April 23 to June 1, with only 2 performances. It takes place at Under the White Big Top at 88 Canada Olympic Road. This show proves to be popular among all audiences with its magnificent multi-media and over the top equestrian displays. On top of that it includes an astonishing 3 different costumes as well as depicting humans and horses travelling across glaciers, waterfalls, canyons and deserts. This show is definitely a sight to see for people of all ages!

4. BBQ and Blues

Attention all foodies! BBQ and Blues is being held for the fourth year in Calgary on Saturday, May 24 from 6pm-1am at 24 9 AVE SE. What better way to usher out May and welcome in June then indulging in some good old fashion southern BBQ! What makes this event even better is that it supports Cerebral Palsy with tickets costing $5. Now, $5 may seem pricey, but when the money goes towards such a great cause and you’re able to enjoy some mouthwatering BBQ it really is worth it. You can obtain a ticket by going to www.kinsmenclubofcalgary.com. There will also be door prizes and a silent auction so make sure you don’t miss out on this event!
