Employee Spotlight: Arnold Casten - Senior Architectural Drafting Technician

Posted September 6, 2018 By Excel Homes

Arnold is our Senior Architectural Drafting Technician and is an absolute pleasure to work with. His genuine kindness and calm demeanour makes him a great addition to the Excel team. Originally, he wanted to go into nursing, but ended up in the housing industry instead, and has now been in it for 18 years!

1. How did you get into the home building industry?

I originally wanted to be a nurse after high school in the Philippines. I went to the university that I wanted to enroll in, but the nursing program was full and I’d have to wait another year. I was disappointed, but then I ran into my high school classmate who has the same fate as me. He was going to a different university to enroll in Architecture and he said that I should as well. He shared that he had always seen me as artistic type in high school and convinced me to go for it. When we immigrated to Calgary it was Jager Homes who gave me my first opportunity after many attempts to break into the industry.

2. How long have you been with Excel?

I have been with Excel for a year and a half, but I have 18 years of experience in the home building industry in Calgary. It’s been great working here. I like working for big home builders because of the atmosphere - it’s exciting, there is a lot going on, and it’s challenging.

3. What is the most rewarding part of your position?

Being part of creating blueprints for a customer’s dream home is a good feeling. Also, it’s rewarding when you know you are able to help and provide support and/or answers to my colleagues.

4. How do you enjoy spending your free time outside of work?

I like spending my time with friends and family, I have a big family here which is great. We like to have potlucks, play mahjong, and sing karaoke. During the summer I like to go camping, play golf, and go fishing. In the winter, I keep busy playing basketball, coaching my son’s basketball team, and snowboarding. Travelling is also a love of mine. Recently, we went to Japan, Italy, and Spain in less than a year. It was awesome and we are so grateful for it!

5. Where do you see yourself and/or Excel within the next year?

I like what I’m doing and I am happy to still be doing it. I enjoy the challenges, and I am always open to new opportunities within the company.
