Winter Home Readiness Guide
November 25, 2014
When the weather outside is frightful that fire inside’s delightful. Except for when it’s time to pay your winter heating bill. Calgary’s sub-zero temperatures are already upon us. So, before the next big freeze hits check out these simple eco-friendly winter maintenance tips to help keep your house cozy, body warm and wallet happy:
- Put a Sock in It. Metaphorically speaking of course. Inspect your windows for excess condensation and ice build-up, as well as drafts. Check interior and exterior caulking to see if there are any gaps. Remove and replace worn caulking yourself, or call in an expert.
- Set it and forget it. One of the easiest ways to save on heating is by setting the timer on your thermostat. Lower the heat during the day mid-week, and in the evenings when you’re sleeping. Your bank account will be grateful.
- Check ‘em out and clean ‘em up. If your furnace filter is dirty, then airflow is compromised, which will increase your heating costs and can pose as a fire risk. Check your furnace manual for the recommended filter cleaning and maintenance schedule. While it’s top of mind, clean your hood fan and humidifier filters as well.
- Back it up. Reduce the direction of your ceiling fans in the winter to push warm air into the room. One of the easiest money saving maintenance tips!
- What a set of pipes. You want to keep them that way, right? Drain and turn the off water to outside taps to prevent them from freezing and bursting in cold weather.
- Don’t leave it too long. Dried, fallen leaves can clog gutters, causing trapped water to freeze. Leaves are also a haven for rodents, so be sure to clear areas around outside wires to prevent them from being chewed.
