Winter Home Readiness Guide

Home Tips & Tricks

When the weather outside is frightful that fire inside’s delightful. Except for when it’s time to pay your winter heating bill. Calgary’s sub-zero temperatures are already upon us. So, before the next big freeze hits check out these simple eco-friendly winter maintenance tips to help keep your house cozy, body warm and wallet happy:

  1. Put a Sock in It. Metaphorically speaking of course. Inspect your windows for excess condensation and ice build-up, as well as drafts. Check interior and exterior caulking to see if there are any gaps. Remove and replace worn caulking yourself, or call in an expert.
  1. Set it and forget it. One of the easiest ways to save on heating is by setting the timer on your thermostat. Lower the heat during the day mid-week, and in the evenings when you’re sleeping. Your bank account will be grateful.
  1. Check ‘em out and clean ‘em up. If your furnace filter is dirty, then airflow is compromised, which will increase your heating costs and can pose as a fire risk. Check your furnace manual for the recommended filter cleaning and maintenance schedule. While it’s top of mind, clean your hood fan and humidifier filters as well.
  1. Back it up. Reduce the direction of your ceiling fans in the winter to push warm air into the room. One of the easiest money saving maintenance tips!
  1. What a set of pipes. You want to keep them that way, right? Drain and turn the off water to outside taps to prevent them from freezing and bursting in cold weather.
  1. Don’t leave it too long. Dried, fallen leaves can clog gutters, causing trapped water to freeze. Leaves are also a haven for rodents, so be sure to clear areas around outside wires to prevent them from being chewed.
