Spring Cleaning Tips For Your New Home

Home Tips & Tricks

Spring has sprung! Sure, we’re waiting on leaves and vibrant green grass. And, yes, there’s probably at least one more dusting of snow before the winter tires come off. But heck, why not get in to the spirit of things and prepare for sunshine, warmth and everybody’s favourite – patio season!

Grab your dusters, Swiffer’s and power washers – it time to start spring-cleaning!

  1. Make A Plan. There is no need to feel overwhelmed with the task at hand. Rome wasn’t built in a day people! Map out a schedule in your calendar. Start with de-cluttering. It’s a lot easier to clean the corners when you can see them. Go room by room – and set your own timeline. Perhaps it’s an hour in the evenings after the kids are in bed. Or – you get them to help and block out a morning each weekend. By creating a plan you’ll have an end date to work towards.
  2. Expiration Date. If you have a hard time getting rid of clutter and unwanted items, try putting an expiration date on them. For example, if we haven’t used X in X months (or years!) it’s time to say goodbye. Get your kids to go through their toys and clothes as well. Have a yard sale and let them keep the profits – or encourage giving by donating gently used items to a family in need.
  3. Go Green. April is Earth Month, so why not try using homemade green cleaning It’s a great way to save money, while reducing your carbon footprint. You’ll also be more inclined to let the kiddos polish the furniture if you know the cleaner they’re wielding is non-toxic – talk about a win win!
  4. Start at the top. It’s always best if you clean from the top down. This way your ceiling cobwebs won’t dirty your clean floors. Same goes for your blinds, ceiling fan, headboards etc. Don’t forget the top of your fridge, cabinets, lampshades, artwork and hood fan! Try using a lint roller on fabric lampshades and vacuum your couch – hopefully there’s only coins hiding under the cushions.
  5. Storage Solutions. Who needs a junk drawer when you have storage solutions? Show your pantry, closets and drawers some love and your life will become infinitely easier. Think label makers, drawer organizers and matching hangers (yes!) Spend an hour on Pineterest for inspiration – then let the magic happen.
  6. Touch-Ups. As you’re cleaning the walls take note of any dings, chips or marks. A little putty and touch-up paint will make everything feel fresh and new again. Buy a furniture repair marker and go to town on chips and scratches.
  1. Patio Time. Borrow or rent a pressure washer and hose down walkways, patios and decks. Wipe down outdoor furniture and kids toys and air out cushions and rugs. Give your barbeque a good scrub while you’re at it.
  2. It’s 5 O’clock Somewhere. By the time you’re finished there will be nothing left to do but enjoy the fruits of your labour. Grab a cold one, put your feet up and let the sun shine in!
