Enjoy A Happy and Healthy New Year

The holiday season is upon us, and for most that means endless parties, events and indulgences. You know, like beer, bubbles and baked goods. But try not to worry too much if the festivities cause the notch in your belt to move a little to the left. January is a brand new year and there’s no better time to focus on your health and wellness.

Many of our communities have fabulous recreation facilities and/or community centres near by, and utilizing them is a great way to shed unwanted holiday pounds and spend time with your family. To help get you on track with your New Year’s fitness goals we’ve highlighted the recreational opportunities in and around Cochrane’s Sunset Ridge and Mahogany in southeast Calgary.

Sunset Ridge in Cochrane

  • Winter Walks. Within the community you’ll find kilometres of paved pathways that offer spectacular views of the snow draped Canadian Rocky Mountains.
  • Make a Splash. Big Hill Leisure Pool in downtown Cochrane features a lap pool and leisure pool with tot area. Register for swimming lessons, or just spend an afternoon splashing around with the family.
  • Take a Hike. Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park, just five minutes east of Cochrane, offers a year round outdoor playground in the front ranges of the Canadian Rockies.
  • Work Up a Sweat. With onsite child minding, the Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre, makes it easy to get in shape. Lift some weights, join a class or try out the totally fun and addictive Pickleball – a racket sport combining elements of tennis, badminton and Ping-Pong.

Mahogany in South East Calgary

  • Play Outdoors. Mahogany’s 265 acres of parks and open space offer up a whole lot of winter fun. Climbing up a toboggan hill, a hundred or so times, will definitely help to keep you and the kids active.
  • Glide and Slide. Grab some skates and hit the community’s private lake for an afternoon of skating or pick up hockey.
  • Get Moving. You’ll find 22 km of pathways within the Mahogany community for walking, jogging and bike riding.
  • Hit the Beach Club. Working out is easy when you live at Mahogany, as all residents have access to a 22, sq ft private Beach Club, which includes a dedicated skate room, full-size gym and shower facilities.
  • Snowshoe Adventure. If you can walk then you can snowshoe, so grab the kids and head to Calgary’s sprawling Fish Creek Provincial Park, which is just 1 minutes away.
